Why sometimes you DO need to pigeon-hole people to be successful
In today’s fast-moving world, we need to make very quick judgements on people. This is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, you need to decide quickly if they are going to be useful to you or if they will waste your time. On the other hand, you never want to make wrong assumptions about people, especially if they can help you progress. Is a girl dressed in a short skirt a slut or someone that just feels good about their body? Is a businessman with no flash watch wealthy and low-key or a newbie trying to make it in business life? Is an entrepreneur or motivator really worth listening to or are they some loser behind a computer re-quoting other people’s words? It is difficult but if you want to be successful you need to differentiate. I would say firstly, you DO need to pigeon-hole people, otherwise your time will be wasted. I’m afraid to say, I do this and with years of experience, I am pretty good at it as I HATE my time being wasted. I’m busy and have ambitions. At the same time, if you make too much assumptions, you may lose opportunities. You know what will help you? Body language! It will help you KNOW if someone is giving you bullshit or if they are real. I have been using it since my late teens and I can read people relatively well (probably 90% accuracy). When I interview people, I hardly ever listen to what they have to say. Body language also extends to people’s tone and manner of speaking, whether in person or via email etc. Learn the art of “reading people” and you will be much closer to becoming a more successful version of yourself. Get the balance right between pigeon-holing people and not making assumptions. With practice, you will get there. Reading people becomes second nature when you stop listening to their words but instead look for other clues they are giving out.
